It was great while it lasted, but Steve Davis’ dream run in the 2010 Betfred.com World Championship has ended with a 13-5 quarter-final defeat to Neil Robertson.
In truth, the Nugget did well to even extend the match to today’s third and final session for he had to win the final two frames last night to do that.
Therefore it was all about whether the 52-year-old could pinch a frame or two today to entertain the fans and he managed to bag the opener – but not before he was introduced as Dennis Taylor for his walk into the arena! MC Rob Walker was almost unspeakably embarrassed about that afterwards, I can tell you…
A 107 break by Robertson confirmed his inevitable passage into the last four for the second consecutive year and the blond Aussie will start out against Shaun Murphy or Ali Carter tomorrow afternoon for a place in the final.
Robertson remains the 10/3 second favourite for the title, but as I type this Ronnie O’Sullivan is hardening as ‘jolly’ all the time and is in to 11/8 after making a fine start to session two against Mark Selby.
The Rocket took the opener and then knocked in a break of 89 to go 6-4 ahead before Selby responded with a frame-winning 75. With a lead of 46 points in frame 12, O’Sullivan looks on course to go 7-5 up…
